What is SB 1383?
California State Senate Bill 1383 (SB 1383) was established to reduce the amount of organic matter in landfills in order to lower the amount of methane emissions and other short-lived climate pollutants generated. It also seeks to recover surplus edible food to feed individuals in need. To meet these goals, the state mandated specific targets to be met by 2025: Recover 20% of edible food waste for human consumption, & Reduce the amount of organic waste sent to landfills by 75%.
Organics targeted in SB 1383 refers to food waste, yard trimmings, green waste, paper, cardboard, non-hazardous wood waste etc. These waste materials make up half of the content in California's landfills! Organic waste poses an environmental concern because it emits 20% of the state's methane emissions. Methane is a greenhouse gas that is 80-85 times as potent as carbon dioxide. Plus, it releases air pollutants such as PM2.5, which are known to worsen respiratory conditions like asthma.
