Free Backyard Composting Workshop & Intro to Bokashi - Tecolote Nature Center

Through composting and Bokashi fermentation, you can improve the quality of your soil, reduce waste and air pollution, while saving energy, money, and water! Learn the basics in this presentation!

Learn about composting and Bokashi!

Join Solana Center for this 2-hour presentation at the beautiful Tecolote Canyone Nature Center where you will learn the basics of backyard composting and an introduction to Bokashi- a way to compost ALL of your food waste.

Bokashi is a method for fermenting all organic waste, including meat, dairy and liquids. The process uses lactobacillus bacteria to predigest waste matter, which minimizes odors and decreases composting time.

Workshop includes optional Tecolote Bird Walk from 8-11 AM sponsored by the Audubon. Join part of the hike before the workshop! More information will be posted here during the 4th week of September. Registration is required.

In this workshop, we will cover the following topics:

  • What is composting and why it is so important
  • What tools and materials you'll need
  • Which items are compostable and which are not
  • What is Bokashi?
  • How is it used?
