How did you find Solana Center and start volunteering with us?

My first recollection of visiting Solana Center site was when I moved here more than 20 years ago. My husband and I dropped off cardboard boxes from the move, so they could be recycled.  Then for our anniversary about 10 years ago, my husband gave me a composting bin which he purchased from Solana Center.  He wrapped it and had it in the living room on the day of our anniversary.  It was a surprise and I was thrilled. In turn, I gave him a pitch fork. I first became a volunteer about a year ago, supporting an event at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. It was there that I learned about the Master Composter course, which connected me to more volunteer opportunities.

What is your background in sustainability?

My education in sustainability is mostly informal.  I was part of many sustainability groups at Invitrogen/Life Technologies where I worked. One of them involved committing and telling others your commitment to improving the environment we live in.  The campaign was called "Do One Thing."  Some of the paths taken were small, like bringing your lunch instead of purchasing it or asking take out restaurants to refrain from giving you plastic silverware. My commitment was to use only cloth napkins instead of paper napkins. I made them from fabric scraps from a local drapery store.

What is the number one way you reduce your carbon footprint (or list a few if you can't pick)?

We use solar power for all of our home electrical needs. We compost all food waste through traditional and vermi-composting. I drive a hybrid car and walk when practical.  I am also part of the landscape committee for our HOA and promote using waterwise plants and non-invasive species.

What are some of your other hobbies?

I enjoy hiking and generally keeping fit. I also enjoy cooking with mostly farm fresh ingredients.
