Used Oil Recycling

Why Recycle Used Oil?

Did you know that used motor oil never wears out? It just gets dirty and can be recycled, re-refined, and then used again. Recycling used motor oil conserves a natural resource (oil) and is good for the environment too! Motor oil poured onto the ground or into storm drains, or tossed into trash cans (even in a sealed container) can contaminate and pollute the soil, groundwater, streams, and rivers. Recycling your used motor oil reduces this pollution threat. When you take your used oil to a certified center for recycling, you are protecting the environment, conserving a valuable resource, and getting paid for it. That's a winning combination!

To Recycle Your Used Motor Oil...

  • Drain oil into a clean container with a tight fitting lid, such as a reusable combination drain pan/storage container. Soda bottles, and milk jugs with screw-top lids also make good storage containers.

  • Keep oil change pans free of water. Oil that is contaminated with water or gasoline can't be recycled, and must be disposed of in an expensive manner. Store your used oil in a leak-proof container.

  • Keep used fluids separate from one another. Mixing them may make them non-recyclable.

  • Before transporting, check container integrity, tighten lids, secure containers from shifting, and cover.

  • Drain oil filters prior to bringing them to a Collection Facility. Your oil filters may also be recycled. Call your local recycler to confirm.

  • Take your used oil and filter to a used oil collection facility

Rerefined Oil
What is re-refined oil?
Rerefined oil is used motor oil that undergoes an extensive rerefining process to remove contaminants to produce a good-as-new base oil. This base oil is then sold to blenders who add additive packages to produce lubricants such as motor oil, transmission fluid, and grease. The main difference between rerefined and virgin oil products is that rerefined represents the responsible choice for the environment.
